From your deck on the Huon River, you’ll spot black swans gliding across the water and the occasional sea eagle overhead. A short drive takes you into the world-famous Hartz Mountains, where glacial lakes, alpine wildflowers, and ancient forests offer unforgettable walks. This is a region where the rhythm of tides and birdsong shapes the day.

Food here is as local as it gets. The valley is famous for its crisp apples, boutique ciders, cool-climate wines, and fresh seafood straight from the river. Franklin and nearby towns are dotted with pubs, cafés, and restaurants that celebrate seasonal Tasmanian produce. Whether you’re sipping on small-batch gin, sampling wood-fired sourdough, or enjoying a riverside meal, the Huon’s flavours are as authentic as its landscapes.
See the Southern Lights
Franklin sits right on the banks of the Huon River with minimal light pollution to the south, making it a great spot to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Australis. When there are clear southern skies and little light pollution, the dancing green and pink lights sometimes roll right across the valley, reflected in the still waters below. The aurora is a rare natural light show caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with Earth’s atmosphere. Few places in the world offer such a vivid display so close to civilisation.
